n o, m. Old loan-word from Lat. diaconus. It dates back to the beginning of Christianity, as the syncope of `a' shows (cf. lecca, scena, betha, ern- &c.). Oir. dechon with u-timbred -chi-, hence in Mid.-Ir. regularly written and pron. deochain. Cf. dechoid, Mid.-Ir. deochuid (and dechaid), with which it rhymes Fél. May 4 : Mochuae cain dechoid (v.l. deochaid, deochoid, dechaid): i féil Siluain dechoin (v.l. deochain, dechain); dechor, Mid.-Ir. deochair, with which it rhymes SR 4533 . Gl. 454 ( subdecháin, ib. 455 ), the mark of length is intelligible if deochán was the form used by the copyist. Deochán, then, dates back to the 15th century.
