drinnrosc nAlso drindrosc o,n. later m.? n p. usually -ruisc,
-roisc, but -rosci, BDD § 8 ( YBL 91b ), -roisci, H. 3.18, 529 .
Synonymous with indrosc and rindrosc (-ruisc?) (q.v.) which
45sometimes appear as variant readings for it. Wish, request,
boon demanded, usually in return for quarter given; but in
BDD § 8 used of gifts demanded by a mother on the birth of
a child from the father; in Ériu iii 138.92 (Expuls. of the
Déisi) the terms rindruisc and indrosc apply to gifts claimed
50by a woman as her marriage-portion; cf. also ZCP viii 311.26 ,
where an `indrosc' is asked for apparently without any
equivalent boon. Almost always accompanied by numeral
trí (for an exception see ZCP viii 311 ), though in some cases
only one or two boons are subsequently specified. Acc. to
55Zimmer ZCP i 94 n. lit. `rosc' of contention, drind being g s. of
drenn quarrel, rosc either eye or (more probably) saying,
utterance
; so also Corm. s.v. indrosc . The form rindrosc (or
rindruisc; only the pl. occurs), which is less freq. than the
other two, may have arisen through association with rosc
60 eye, as though the meaning were apple of the eye. Possibly
the orig. word was indrosc, drindrosc being due to assimila-
tion of the numeral trí which nearly always preceded it (for
an analogous case cf. drilind above). Defined: .i. itchi nó
athchuingi, H. 3.18, 649b ; .i. roga choice, Laws i 72.5 . In all
65the follg. exx. except the last the boons are demanded in
return for sparing life: anmain in anmain a Chuchulainn, or
