DOforDI. The confusion ofdianddoin proclisis
dates back to the Cambr. and the Wb glosses. It is quite
40possible that on the lips of the people di had as early as the
8th century the same forms as to-day,i.e.unstressed də in
proclisis,dí-in pronominal cpds. Under the influence of
the latter forms (dím,dít,de),di delingered on all through
Mid.-Ir. The presentde, dhe, is partly due to etymological
45spelling, partly (Cork, Kerry) renders a spokende, ye
= Oir.de(di+pron. 3 sg.),cf.mod.as,air,aige. The
fusion ofdianddowas facilitated by their being unaccented;
but it was also partly due to syntactical confusion of these
two prepositions which occasionally might both be used
50synonymously with one and the same verb.—do:prím-

55Lat.dis-. Compare especially the distinction made between
dí-chor a putting awayandde-chor a disagreement,
a difference, diversity
, and that betweendí-taa stands apart
andde-buith difference of opinion, dissent.De-fromdis-
possibly also indedail.De-was either developed before
60broad consonants or possibly like Gk.δίαit goes back to
dis-a(modelled onμητά, κατά= Ir.ceta-). Asdĕ-in the
great majority of cases has the same functions asdí-, this
explanation presupposes a blending ofdēanddisin Irish.
The original sense ofdis-seems preserved only in nominal
65cpds. in Irish (de-chor,de-buith,de-dail).
