45the appearance of an adj. deriv. of1 dathor of apast pc.of
dathaid; but apparently the feeling of its connection with
dath was early lost, as the marked divergence in meaning
shows. Apart from the phrase `is dattae lim' (already
Wb 8 a 6 ), it mostly occurs in chevilles and stereotyped
50phrases, very often, as it seems, introduced to alliterate with
a neighbouring noun in d-. It seems mainly a literary
word, used by Mid.-Ir. writers in the vague sense ofsúairc
andcáin, by which it is occasionally replaced even in com-
paratively old MSS (Rawl.).
