Forms: ss, s, s, s, sw

the sixteenth letter of the Irish alphabet, and in the Ogham alphabet the fourth letter in the b-group. Irish name sail (willow), q.v. In O. and Mid.Ir. frequently written ss except in initial position or following a long or unstressed vowel (césad, is). Note also isamlaid for is s.¤ s always represents a voiceless sibilant. Lenition of s is first marked by the punc- tum delens. The marking of lenition is not usual in the older glosses, and only becomes frequent with Sg. Lenited s has the pronunciation h. In Mid. and Mod.Ir. lenition of s is also marked by means of a prefixed t(h) (in origin the d of the article devoiced before nouns beginning with s): cor ceile tsaorfhlatha, Laws v 356.6 . í cind tṠleibe Smoil, Acall. 4531 . do tshinnrudh, St. Ercuil 54 . See tretsillabach. Where s represents original *sw the lenited form is written f (b): siur, fiur: toibned (*to-senn-). s represents Indo-Eur. *s only when initial and in the groups sc, st. In other positions it is always from ss, which in turn results from groups like ns, ms, ts, ks, tt, etc. See Thurn. Gramm. § 155 . In initial position s can also represent original *sw (see above) and *st ( Thurn. Gramm. § 217 ). In loan-words s(s) represents Lat. s(s), occasionally also groups consisting of s and another consonant, e.g. sk, st, ps, sm, sn, see Ped. i 216 ff . Also Lat. f in the older loan- words, see Ped. i 220 - 1 .
