o, npr. m. Also spelled Decull, Decell, Degell, Deigell; Deichell, Deighell. Possibly a cpd. of deg + gell, though in an old npr. like this one would expect rather †Dag-gell.—Oldest spelling Decull: g s. Decuill, Arm. 19 a 1 : Cairell mac Ferguso maic Decuill; a Fergus mac Deichill is mentioned BB 200 b 43 ; meic Decuil, Thes. ii 281. 14 = Decill, Vita Columbae 247 n.f. = Deigill BB 212 b 24 . For the broad -gg- cf. -accai sees (beside -aicci). Mid.-Ir. Deichell and Deighill are, at least partly, to be judged as corrupt renderings of older Decell, Degell, which as a npr. had become obs. long before the Mid.-Ir. period. A genuine Ir. †Dechell or †Degell (i.e. Deghell) is not sufficiently supported.
