n d. A certain black insect, probably a chafer or black-beetle , synonymous with doel according to old grammarians. Dega in early Mid.-Ir. gave way to dóel. In the phrase `duibithir degaid' it is frequently confused with dethach `smoke,' so always in YBL.— For the n s. cf. dega, Oss. v 262. 4 ; further the npr. Dega LL 205 b7 (not for Deda), and perhaps also the a s. dega in the old Eg. version of BDD.—Etymology by Stokes ZCP iii 468 , Ériu ii 152 , BDD voc.; but dega is hardly to be separated from daig, gen. dego `fire, pang.'
