The stress falls on the middle syllable. To judge from the spoken language the first two syllables are long. The phrase seems to contain the preposition de and the dative (sg. and pl.) of fíre, compare the affirmative tria ḟírib: ocht gcéd don tsluagh churata dororchair liom tria ḟírib perished by me in truth Duan. Finn 88 st 43 , and such phrases as ar fír, Acall. 5824 ; de ḟír in truth, ib. 4137 ; iar fír, 5606 , &c., but the origin of the first r is obscure.
