I Of living beings or their attributives: stout-hearted, courageous, daring, fearless; emphasized: bold, brave ; the opposite of etánae, uaimnech, immecal, eclach `timid, fearful,' and often synonymous with essamain, trén, calmae, slattrae. It translates Lat. audax, temer, and confidens. Laws and Glosses offer no example.

MOD. dána, fear dána a brave (bold) man : dá ṁalluigh- theacht é bíonn sé na ḟear dhána (Kerry). dá ḟaid iseadh is dána the longer the bolder. Begley and MacCurtin Engl.-Ir. Dict. (1732) give: buille dána = buille láidir a bold stroke; dá mbeinn coṁdána ┐ a rádh if I may be so bold as to say. They also give the meaning `audacious,' which is still heard in the south. dána ar familiar with Dinn. ; cf. dánacht, dánaigecht. The dán = dána, mentioned by O'R. and Dinn. hails from Scotch dictionaries.
