(neb-, neph-) neg. prefix used in composition with
nouns and adjectives in temporary formations, serving
merely to negate the positive sense of the word or denote the
absence of the object (action, quality, etc.) expressed thereby,
without adding any new meaning as do the prefixes an-, é-,
mí- (e.g. nebchretem = not believing; anchretem = unbelief).
In O.Ir. the forms neb- and neph- are used; in Wb. neb-
before a vowel or voiced consonant, neph- before a voiceless
cons.; in Sg. and Ml. only neph- (often written as a distinct
word). In early Mid.Ir. neph- (nef-) and nem- are used, before
voiceless and voiced consonants respectively; during the
Mid.Ir. period neph- is ousted by nem- (also written nemp-,
nemth-). Before a palatal vowel in the follg. word the final
consonant is affected (later expressed by the spelling neim-).
Mod.Ir. neamh-, (before palatal vowel) neimh-. Lenites follg.
consonant; occas. (in late texts) eclipses a follg. b:

nemtsomainech,
ZCP x 306.34
is due to analogy of cases in which lenited s prefixes t after
the article; cf. nemtsos.
In Glosses common esp. with verbal abstracts, participles
and nomina agentis. With vn. commonly used in O. and
Mid.Ir. in the sense
not to (do someth.), to refrain from (doing
someth.), where in Mod.Ir. the prep. gan would be used. With
adj. in Glosses freq. renders Lat. in-.
With nouns and adjs. often used to express an alternative
or contrast to a foregoing corresponding positive: imdibe Tít
nó a nebimdibe Titus' circumcision or his non-circumcision,
